My wife aka, Spiceybrain created this beautiful and personal piece for this auction (http://www.hanami-afterdark.org/auctions/#). There is a lot of symbolism behind this piece of suffering and hope depicted by a kind of rainbow-this bird that appeared to her in various ways. She dedicated this piece to those battling cancer in particular. There have been some cancer warriors close to us in recent years. This piece is close to her heart. It looks especially stunning as a metallic print! Nancy has also made some waves with her art and has worked in feature animation in backgrounds. She’s my secret weapon when I attempt to develop ideas and designs to pitch. She’s been slowed by our children and is itching to get back to producing more personal art. Yet, somehow she has managed to produce a shocking stack of art over the years while raising our kids-mostly art for clients.

Ode To A Sleepless Nite

Oh thy Nite,

why Thee bite?

Woe is me.

Please let me be.

I plea for just one day

that I could have my way.

Take me places; perhaps the sea!

Or, I should like to leap a tree.

Kids, no need to fight this knight

I’ve been promised for once tonight.

Renowned artist/muralist, Miguel Angel Ramirez (http://muralsbymiguel.com/) also happens to be my father-in-law.  He’s an experienced and versatile artist who studied art in Mexico’s most prestigious art academy, “La Esmeralda”.  He prefers to work abstract (as indicated by one of these pieces).  But, he is equally capable of the most meticulously rendered paintings to rival some of the great masters.  These are the paintings he donated to this auction (http://www.hanami-afterdark.org/auctions/#).

You would not believe some of the homes-er, estates he has been commissioned to adorn with his art-several of which were celebrity clientele.  And, I thought people only lived in 20k+ sq/ft. homes on The Bachelor!  Through him I’ve gotten a glimpse of how that 1% actually lives.  Despite that, he is equally content producing art in more modest settings.  -Waveybrain

Christophe Vacher, another amazing artist who has had an extensive career in animation working in visual development and backgrounds has contributed this beautiful original painting for this event.  Christophe has been a friend of my wife for years.  As you can see, in his enviable French veins flows the blood of a master artist.  Beyond his animation work, he has studied martial arts, and has established a fine art footing as well.  This would be a nice piece to have, don’t you think?  It could be yours’!  The Japanese word for “Hope” is shown in the background. -Waveybrain

An original watercolor by Brian Kesinger also available (see below).  Brian recently won a prestigious Annie award for his storyboard work on Disney’s “Prep and Landing”.  He was one of the more engaged artists who went out of his way to help make this art auction a success.  He has worked on many great films including Tarzan, Tangled, Winnie The Pooh, Atlantis…I really like this piece he has donated for the cause.  -Waveybrain

Master printmaker, Olga Gerdjikov originally from Bulgaria has also contributed work for this auction (http://www.hanami-afterdark.org/art-show/live-auction/).  Personally, I love her work.  It’s all hand crafted.  Olga has worked as a background artist for Spongebob for many years as well as other Nickelodeon shows.  She’s a really nice woman who likes to delve in to life’s mysteries.  -Waveybrain

An original, signed Genie drawing-by non other than master animator, Eric Goldberg could be yours!  Eric and his wife Sue have long been known for their generosity and mentorship among artists who have been fortunate enough to know them.  Truthfully, the field is full of great people, but few are as experienced a willing to help as the Goldbergs have proven.  Visit the auction benefiting Japanese Tsunami victims (see link posted below). -Waveybrain

This original, signed Drew Struzan drawing included in a beautiful book compilation of his life’s work could be yours! See my previous post.  If you don’t already know, Mr. Struzan is the incredibly prolific artist behind so many classic film posters-too many to name, really…Indiana Jones, Back To The Future, Star Wars…Man!  I want this one for myself!

My wife (spiceybrain.tumblr) compiled an amazing group of artists to participate in an art auction benefiting Japanese tsunami victims taking place in Washington DC commencing tonight at the Ronald Reagan Intl. Trade Building. If you’re in the area, go and see it! It’ll be up until the 27th of April as part of the larger Centennial “Cherry Blossom Tree Festival” happening in DC. We’ll be visiting later this month.

There are many great artists contributing-most of whom have worked in the animation field as designers, animators or visual development artists for some great films. In the auction you’ll find original art from Drew Struzan, Eric & Sue Goldberg, Paul Felix, signed cels from Spongebob and Fairly Odd Parents (pat myself on back for getting those:), etc. Everyone in the auction has made a name for himself/herself. So, if you find a piece that calls your name, research the artist too. You may be surprised about their professional contributions, e.g. Brian Kesinger, Kuni Tomita, Olga Gerdjikov, Craig Elliot, Christophe Vacher, Dominick Domingo, Sean Eckols, Bob Kato, Jon J. Muth, Leticia Lacey, etc.

Don’t forget to see the work of my wife, Nancy Schier and her father Miguel Angel Ramirez.

Please go and check out the online auction and get your hands on some original and rare art by some amazing friends and artists!

Just skimmed through cartoonbrew and saw a bunch of interesting posts:  UPA tribute at LACMA (in LA), Fri., March 30th @7:30;  Mary Blair Golden Books being reprinted come Aug.; Glen Keane resigns/retires? from Disney after a long, industrious career-check out (http://www.arludik.com/oeuvresE/Keane/kean.htm); Butch Hartman launches “Yoo Toon”, another channel looking for animated content to produce;  and this one:  Pete Doctor heads up a series of flip books showcasing the animation of “The Nine Old Men”.  I had to pre-order this one (you get a discount).  So, a lot going on in the biz these days. -Waveybrain

The Archive Series—Walt Disney’s Nine Old Men: The Flipbooks will release on September 18. This pet project of UP director Pete Docter is among the more unique book concepts, and pays tribute to the work of the Nine Old Men in the best way possible: by displaying scenes their animation work. Amazingly, none of the […]

Were it not for PES’ involvement, I wouldn’t give a crap.  But, lucky for Eisner (I suppose) I’m now interested to see what he does with this material. -Waveybrain

Indie animator PES (pictured above) moved from New York to Los Angeles a couple years back to fulfill his ambition to become a feature film director. It didn’t take long. Deadline Hollywood broke the story this afternoon that PES has been tapped to direct a feature film based on the Eighties fad Garbage Pail Kids.
The […]

If you think Google only hires scientists, engineers and geniuses of the highest order, fear not, they also hire cartoonists. We don’t typically post job listings (maybe we should), but this one is too good to pass up. Google’s Doodle team informs us that they’re currently looking for more in-house Doodlers, particularly those with strong […]
